Course Syllabus

Welcome!

Humboldt State University logo and a majestic redwoodLearning 101 is an informal learning opportunity for you and all Humboldt students. It consists of nine modules and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. You can work at your own pace, and log in and out as needed. Please note that Learning 101 is mobile friendly, so you can access it on your computer, tablet, iPad, or smart phone. Once you complete all activities, you will receive the Learning 101 Achievement Badge that will post to your Canvas profile.

Learning Outcomes

Learning 101 is an online tutorial designed to help you become successful as a Cal Poly Humboldt learner. After the class you will be able to:

  • Describe factors that influence your learning and use this understanding to help you succeed as a learner
  • Apply the principles of effective communication
  • Develop confidence in your ability to succeed in current and future college courses
  • Demonstrate your ability to use Canvas and other online tools to learn effectively
  • Explain how to find technical and academic support resources
  1. Structure of Learning 101

    This tutorial has nine modules (topics) that you can easily locate in the Modules link on the left side course navigation menu:

    7. Study Skills
    8. Thinking and AI
    9. Student Support

    Please participate in each module by carefully reading and viewing content, engaging in interactive exercises and completing the activities at the end. Complete each module in turn. Once you complete all activities, you will receive an Achievement Badge. Each module is structured the same, with four sections:

    1. Overview: A brief description of the topic
    2. Learning Outcomes: What you can expect to learn from the module
    3. Content: Detailed information about the topic with some interactive elements
    4. Quiz or Survey: A means to help you monitor your learning

Accessibility

This course uses Ally and Immersive Reader. That means that you have choices in how you read or listen to course content.

Ally icons to be able to access various file formatsAlly creates alternative files that can be easier to use by all students. Click the Ally icon to choose the alternative file format you'd like: audio, ePub, electronic braille or BeeLine Reader (for easier and faster on-screen reading).

Immersive Reader icon to be able to access audio versions of the course content and expand the font size Look for the Immersive Reader icon in the top right. You can control the font size, background color and line spacing while a female or male (your choice!) reads the text at the speed you prefer.

Your choice can be based on your learning style, the device you use to participate in the course, and accessibility requirements. It's up to you!

Technology Help

Although your instructors may use different technology throughout the semester, all of us will be using a few common tools. Having and knowing how to use these tools will be essential to academic success this year. So, at a minimum, what do you need?

    • a computer (Windows/Mac/Chromebook)
    • reliable Internet access
