Welcome!
Welcome to the TRiO Talent Search online course!
As you are already well aware, we are in a digital age. When you get to college, you'll be using an online course platform for most of your classes, even the ones that meet in person. We decided to create an online course using Cal Poly Humboldt's learning platform, Canvas, to make sure all of you have access to all the information you need to get to college. We're here to help you achieve your goals, whether you aim to earn a certificate or a Bachelor's degree, or anything in between.
What You'll Find in this Course
This Canvas course is designed to help you learn about each of our four core areas:
Seniors
You'll learn about applying to college (both 2-year and 4-year), applying for Financial Aid, accepting Financial Aid, and College Success Programs & Resources. If you didn't get a chance to follow the course your Junior Year, you should also read through the information available in that module.
Juniors
You'll dive deeper into all the college options available to you and also start learning about college fit. You'll review A-G requirements, study the different types of Financial Aid available, and dive into standardized testing, also known as the ACT and the SAT.
Sophomores
Sophomore year is about improving your study skills and understanding why what you do in high school matters for your future. You'll learn important skills like organization, note-taking, and navigating your textbooks. You'll be introduced to the basics of college options, Financial Aid, and saving money. We're also excited to tell you more about how you can pursue the things you love — like art, sports, and even video games! — in college.
Freshmen
Freshmen year is all about transitioning, adapting, and learning new skills. You'll learn important skills like goal setting, time management, creating a daily and weekly schedule, and developing a good writing mindset. We'll help you prepare for finals and share a few study tips with you. You'll be introduced to A-G requirements and we'll walk you through designing your 4-year high school plan, plus we'll give you some great tips to help you not only survive but thrive your Freshmen year. We also want you to know that there is money for college!
