If you don't make a choice by the due date, you will be assigned to the asynchronous peer review format
Peer review will occur during week 13. This process gives you crucial information in several ways: (1) you read several of your peers' grants, (2) you write peer review report(s) to return to authors, and (3) you GET peer review reports to help you revise your proposal before the end of the semester.
In a face-to-face class, peer review occurs in class, and takes 3 class periods (1.5 weeks since class meets twice a week). The class is divided into 3 groups of 8-10 people, and each group reviews 8-10 grants. Each person reads all the abstracts and at least 2 proposals all the way through. Each person also writes ONE peer review report based on the committee discussion to help the authors revise their proposals. Each person both writes one report and receives one report.
In the online class things have worked differently. We cannot devote 3 weeks to peer review, so the last two semesters I have assigned each person in the class 3 proposals to read and write reports (i.e., turn in the table that you used in the practice peer review session during week 3) for all 3 reports. This means that each person writes three reports and receives 3 reports (but there is no consensus from a committee discussion).
I would like to tell me which format works best for you! Assuming that there are at least 6 people who want to do each format, I am willing to use both formats this semester.
- The people who choose "face-to-face" peer review would meet in Zoom Rooms on Monday of week 13. If you sign up for this format, you must be present that day to participate - if you miss that day, it leaves everyone else in your group in a difficult position.
- The people who choose the online peer review would do it the same way that we did the practice peer review in week 3
Regardless of the format you end up doing, everyone will read 3 full proposals and all peer review reports would be due Sunday, which is just before the fall break, and two academic weeks before the final revised proposal is due (Monday December 13 at 12:10 pm) during final exam week. Early submission of peer review reports is strongly encouraged since that would allow me to return peer review reports to the authors, and give you more time to make revisions.
